Back to the Worlds 1978 memories

How it all started

In 1976 some European drivers went over to the US to compete in the Bicentennial race held at Joel's Race Place in Greenbelt, Washington. The race was arranged to celebrate the US 200 years anniversary.

The day after the race Joel invited us to his place to a party. It was Thomas Hansson, Bjarne Lilliendahl, Egil Aksnes and me. Everyone was excited about the race, as this was the first time it had been a real international event.
Joel suggested that we should follow up with a World Championship in Europe next time. We all looked at each other with disbelief except for Bjarne, who immediately said: "Yeah, we'll do it in Gothenburg in 2 years"......

Afterwards, on the way home, Bjarne looked at our scared faces and said: "Don't worry, we'll fix this!"
Back home Bjarne together with Hasse Nilsson and some other people formed a race organization, and the rest is history.
